Description

Deliciously crispy and cheesy Jalapeno Popper Puff Pastry Straws that are perfect as a snack or appetizer. These twisted pastry sticks feature a creamy blend of cream cheese, cheddar, mozzarella, and spicy jalapeños, baked to golden perfection with a flaky puff pastry crust.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry (store-bought or homemade, thawed if frozen)

Cheese and Jalapeño Filling

  • 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2-3 fresh jalapeños, seeds removed and finely chopped (or 1/4 cup pickled jalapeños)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp smoked paprika (optional, for extra flavor)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For Egg Wash and Garnish

  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Fresh cilantro or green onions for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Make the Filling: In a medium bowl, combine the cream cheese, shredded cheddar, mozzarella, chopped jalapeños, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika (if using), and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix everything until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  3. Prepare Puff Pastry: Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface to prevent sticking. Spread the cheese and jalapeño mixture evenly over the entire pastry sheet, leaving a small border around the edges free.
  4. Form the Straws: Carefully fold the puff pastry in half so the cheese mixture is enclosed between the layers. Press down gently along the edges to seal the pastry. Cut the pastry into strips about 1/2 inch wide using a sharp knife or pizza cutter.
  5. Twist the Strips: Take each strip and twist it a few times to create a spiral, which gives the straws their characteristic look. Place the twisted straws onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them evenly.
  6. Apply Egg Wash: Brush the top of each twisted pastry straw with the beaten egg. This step helps give the pastry a beautiful golden color and a shiny finish once baked.
  7. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the puff pastry is crisp and golden brown.
  8. Serve and Garnish: Remove from the oven and garnish with fresh cilantro or chopped green onions if desired. Serve warm alongside ranch dip, salsa, or sour cream for dipping.

Notes

  • For milder heat, remove all the jalapeño seeds before chopping.
  • You can use pickled jalapeños instead of fresh for a tangier flavor.
  • Make sure the puff pastry is well chilled before rolling out to prevent sticking.
  • Twisting the strips gently but firmly will help keep the shape intact during baking.
  • Serve these straws warm for the best flavor and texture.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for longer.
